2021 County Fair Queen Contest

With many county fairs having to cancel due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Board of Directors of the IAAF voted to cancel the 2021 Miss Illinois County Fair Queen Pageant. Contestants for the January competition would have been chosen at Illinois county fairs this
summer. Current Illinois County Fair Queen Kelsi Kessler will remain throughout 2021 and give up her crown at the 2022 IAAF Convention and Pageant.

In addition, the board voted to cancel the state Talent Show competition, also held in January, due to many county fairs canceling and not having competitions this summer.

The 2021 IAAF Convention, scheduled Jan. 15-17, will still go on at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Springfield. The ever-popular Trade Show and Showcase of Entertainment is expected to be bigger than ever, as county fairs book entertainment and talent for their 2021 fairs. County fair
members will continue to celebrate 111 years of history and will look forward to new information
on putting on their best county fair yet in 2021.

Coronavirus Update IAFE

Everyone is vitally aware of the COVID 19 (coronavirus), which is of very serious concern across the globe. We do not intend to supplant any information you are and should be receiving via the WHO and CDC or the health authorities governing your jurisdiction. We do want to make you aware that as an Association, we are closely monitoring the situation, not only through regular updates from WHO and CDC, but also in communication with other associations and events.

Until such time as we announce a dedicated resource and information portal on our website for the COVID 19 situation, we would recommend the following steps:

  1. Be alert and closely monitor the key sources of information, WHO and CDC. Anyone can subscribe to the CDC information at their special page (see below).

  2. Insurance: If you already have event cancellation insurance, visit with your agent to verify that communicable disease was already covered. If you do not already have event cancellation insurance, then any policy you would procure would exclude coronavirus.

  3. Pandemic planning is similar to emergency planning, but with more specifics. Your existing emergency plan may have components essential to a pandemic plan (i.e. business continuity in case your staff/volunteers cannot leave home to come to work, additional cleaning protocols, special messaging for stakeholders, etc.). Spending time now to work on a pandemic plan would be advised.

The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is the most reliable source of information and news in the United States. Their website resources and news page are constantly updated.

Statement From Attorney

Statement of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs

After recent media coverage about our 2019 Miss Illinois County Fair Queen’s status, the Board of Directors of the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs is issuing the following statement to clarify misinformation:

Alexi Bladel has NOT been relieved of her duties or title as 2019 Miss Illinois County Fair Queen. We have sent a letter to Alexi making this clear.

We have released her from any remaining obligations she would have as the reigning 2019 Miss Illinois County Fair Queen between now and January 2020. Alexi remains the Queen until her successor is named in January, and she will remain on our historical roster with all of our past queens recognizing their year of service. She will also retain all awards, gifts and benefits she has received as our Queen this year.

We greatly appreciate Alexi’s service on behalf of Illinois agriculture and Illinois county fairs and wish her well in her future endeavors, including her decision to serve our country. Out of respect for the privacy of Alexi and all pageant participants, we will have no further comment.

Gilray Garlic Festival Shooting

The tragic shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival is sad news for all of us. The festival was, at one time, a member of IAFE. We, along with our friends from the International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) are sending prayers and sympathy to all involved. The volunteers and supporters will be hit especially hard by this senseless act of violence.

Staying afloat at the Fair

A couple of years back, I pulled into the Fulton County Fairgrounds, my youngest in tow. We were there to make up stalls, before the fair even began. From the backseat came a tiny voice, breathless in anticipation, clear with intent: “I heart the Fulton County Fair.”
